It's in the Bag: Introducing the Sealand Digital Product Passport

We've got this… in the bag.

Sealand has always been built on community. The Sealanders who live and breathe the brand every day. Our customers, who make everything we do possible. Our partners, who help us chase this dream, and our suppliers, who help us push the boundaries of what we can make.

We are proud of that community. We are proud of the story behind what we do, and of all the stories our gear goes on to be part of: the road trips, the early surfs, the commutes, the adventures that start on a Tuesday for no reason at all.

But every bag also has a story that starts before you meet it. Until now, most of it has stayed behind the scenes. Today we are bringing you closer to it than ever before.

Know Your Gear

Meet the Sealand Digital Product Passport.

Every bag in the rollout carries its own unique passport, linked to that one bag and no other. Scan it with your phone, and you can see what your gear is made of and where it comes from. The details live in the passport itself, so you can explore them whenever you like, whether that's in-store before you buy or years down the line.

It also changes what it means to own your bag. Through the passport, you can:

  • Register it as your own. Your bag, officially yours.
  • Use Lost & Found. If your registered bag ever wanders off without you, whoever finds it has a way to get it back to you.
  • Unlock our Evergreen Guarantee. By registering your bag, you get 10 years of free repairs.

More information, a better ownership experience, and gear that's built to stay with you for the long haul.

No Blueprint, Just a Good Partner

Last year we teamed up with the incredible team at ITL Intelligent Label Solutions and their ITL Xplore project, with one shared goal: to build a Digital Product Passport that does more than tick a box. ITL describes it as the first initiative of its kind in South Africa.

When you are among the first to do something, there is no manual to follow. Very few brands anywhere are doing this yet, so we have had to work it out as we go, side by side with ITL.

And it has been a big undertaking. Giving every bag its own unique identity takes an enormous amount of planning and collaboration. Our suppliers, our manufacturers, and our production and operations teams have all had to pull in the same direction, often in ways none of us had tried before.

ITL brought the expertise, the technology and the patience to make it work, and they treated this as a partnership from day one. We could not have done it without them, and we are excited about what we will build together next.

Celebrating the People Behind Our Gear

Over the years, we have worked hard to build a value chain we are proud of: suppliers and makers who share our values and care about doing things properly. Their work usually goes unseen. The passport is our way of celebrating them and giving their skill the recognition it deserves.

It is also how we hold ourselves to account. Putting our value chain on show means taking full ownership of it, not just the parts that make for a good photo. And it means you no longer have to take our word for it. You can explore what your gear is made of and where it comes from, and make up your own mind.

Being open has its own balancing act. Our suppliers have spent years developing their processes, materials and know-how, and that is their competitive edge. Respecting it matters to us as much as transparency does. So with every passport, we are working to share as much as we can with you, while protecting what makes our partners special. It is a line we will keep walking carefully, together with them.

Why Go First

Digital Product Passports are not just a Sealand idea. Around the world, the way products are made and sold is shifting towards more openness. In Europe, new ecodesign rules will make digital product passports a requirement for many everyday products, and clothing and textiles are among the first categories in line.

We could have waited for that wave to reach South Africa. But we have never been very good at waiting for the swell to come to us. We would rather paddle out early, learn as we go and help show what is possible here at home.

Being a trailblazer is not about being first for the sake of it. It is about proving that a small, proudly South African brand can work to global best practice, and hopefully making the path a little easier for those who follow. The more brands that open up the stories behind their products, the better our whole industry gets.

Not Perfect, and That's the Point

Let's be honest: we are not perfect, and the passport won't be either. Not straight away.

We could have kept it in the workshop until every detail was polished. Instead, we chose to launch it now, because it is already useful to you and because the best way to improve something is to put it in real hands and listen.

So this is a starting line, not a finish line. We will keep developing it: the amount of information we can show, how easy it is to use, and the value it brings to you as an owner. As Sealand grows, we keep learning and doing things better, and the passport is where you will see that progress happen.

That is how we approach our gear too. Make it well, use it hard, and keep improving it.

Your Story Starts Here

We can show you where your bag comes from. Where it goes next is up to you.

Next time you pick up your Sealand bag, scan its passport. Explore what it is made of, meet the people behind it and make it officially yours. And if you think something is missing or could be better, let us know. That is how the next chapter gets written.

The Sealand Digital Product Passport was developed in collaboration with ITL through ITL Xplore.
