Designed on the wards. Crafted from waste. Built in Cape Town.
In hospitals, the smallest frustrations add up.
Overfilled pockets. Misplaced tools. Carrying just enough to get through a ward round - but never quite everything you need.
For Ashraf Moosa and Waheed Amanjee, founders of WiZmed, this wasn’t a design problem. It was daily reality.
Both started WiZmed while studying medicine at the University of Cape Town in 2020, during the height of the pandemic. What began as a way to make quality medical equipment more accessible to students quickly grew into a platform supporting healthcare professionals across South Africa and beyond.
But one challenge kept surfacing: not the tools themselves - how they were carried.
Most bags simply weren’t designed for life on the wards.
Too small for real hospital rounds. Too bulky for daily movement. No structure for the essentials clinicians rely on every day.
So healthcare workers adapted. Carrying multiple bags. Overloading slings. Making do.
That’s where Sealand - already a favourite amongst many doctors during ward rounds - came in.
From our workshop beneath the mountains of Hout Bay, we’ve spent years rethinking how gear is made - handcrafted from waste, built to last, and designed with purpose.
“When I first met Ashraf I was blown away by his maturity and how quickly he and Waheed have built up their business - despite the demands of balancing full-time medical studies,” said Sealand Brand Director, Howard Kahn.
“What started out as an idea to help out some classmates with stethoscopes has become a flourishing local business in the form of WiZmed. It was a no-brainer for Sealand to get involved and, in the process, help elevate a fellow local brand. We look forward to building on this relationship as time goes on.
“Most importantly, we’re proud to play a small role in supporting the people doing some of the most essential work there is. The Sealand × WiZmed Ward Bag was designed to make life on the wards just a little easier - built around the real needs of doctors, nurses, and healthcare workers navigating long days in demanding environments.”
Together with WiZmed, we set out to create something genuinely useful: a bag designed specifically for frontline healthcare.
Based on our very popular Zeplin Crossbody bag, we, along with input from the WiZmed team, added extra internal pockets and increased the bag’s size. The result is the Sealand × WiZmed Ward Bag - a reworked Sealand silhouette, scaled and refined around the realities of hospital life.
Ashraf Moosa takes up the story:
“Waheed and I love what Sealand stands for - as a local and sustainable brand. We’ve been blown away by how authentic and helpful they have been from the start.
“From our many hours spent in hospitals, Sealand has long been a firm favourite amongst the medical fraternity. That got us thinking about approaching Sealand. We emailed the team and heard back from Howie almost immediately. Within a few days, he came to see us at our offices.
“After a few meetings, we quickly built a shared vision with Howie and CEO Adrian Hewlett, and now have a bag purpose-built for life on the wards. It’s been an exciting project for us and I’m grateful to Sealand for helping bring our vision for a WiZmed × Sealand Ward Bag to life.”
Built with increased capacity, organised internal storage, and durable, wipeable materials, the Sealand × WiZmed Ward Bag was shaped by real-world use and real clinical feedback.
This collaboration brings together two shared beliefs: that good design starts with understanding people, and that the things we make should carry responsibility too.
From the wards of Groote Schuur to the coastline of Hout Bay, this is a product grounded in Cape Town - built for those doing the work that matters most.
